FAVORITES
Ryan Blaney (+1000)
After four top 5s and 10 top 10s so far this season, Blaney is looking so ripe for his first win of 2022. He has cracked the top 10 in each of his past four starts, including a fifth-place in the 2022 Food City Dirt Race. But even if he struggled last Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway, Blaney is a lock as a favorite for the 2002 edition of the GEICO 500. After all, he’s won twice at the Talladega Superspeedway in his career. He won the 1000Bulbs.com 500 in 2019 there as well as the 2020 version of the GEICO 500.
Joey Logano (+1100)
The Team Penske driver is another multiple winner at Talladega Superspeedway, and he’s also been finding his groove of late. Logano, who finished second in the 2022 Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 400 and third in the 2022 Food City Dirt Race, has three wins at Talladega Superspeedway. He topped the field in the 2015 Campingworld.com 500, 2016 Hellmann’s 500, and in the 2018 GEICO 500.
Austin Cindric (+1400)
Also driving under the Penske banner, Cindric is lacking in experience at Talladega Superspeedway, as he has not started an NASCAR Cup Series race there, but he’s been hot enough this season to get a look as a favorite. Cindric has two top 10s in seven starts this year. He locked up a spot in the playoffs with a win at Daytona.
SLEEPERS
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (+2800)
Here’s what we said about Stenhouse in our sleeper 2022 GEICO 500 sleepers article:
Stenhouse is way out of the playoff picture after eight starts, as he’s still winless with just a single top 10 to show, thus far. However, he’s got some good results in his career at Talladega Superspeedway. For one, he’s already won there, taking the checkered flag in the 2017 iteration of the GEICO 500. That’s part of his six total top 5s and nine top 10s across 17 appearances at the said track, dating all the way back to 2013 when he debuted there with a 13th-place campaign in the Aaron’s 499.
Erik Jones (+6600)
Here’s what we said about Jones in our sleeper 2022 GEICO 500 sleepers article:
Jones hasn’t won a NASCAR Cup Series race since 2018, but it can’t be denied that he’s been a solid driver at Talladega Superspeedway over his last few appearances there. In fact, he’s cracked the top 10 in three of his last four starts there, including a runner-up finish in the 2020 YellaWood 500. The last time he was in Talladega, Jones placed ninth in last year’s YellaWood 500. Overall, Jones has two top 5s, four top 10s, and five top 20s in 10 career starts at Talladega Superspeedway. And then of course, he’s won a superseedway race before when he topped the 2018 Coke Zero Sugar 400 at the Daytona International Speedway.
LONG SHOT
Cody Ware (+50000)
Ware has a career average finish of 28.2 in five starts at Talladega Superspeedway.
Writer’s Prediction
Austin Cindric wins the 2022 GEICO 500.
