Betting on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+4)
Record: 16-8 Overall / 11-6 Conference
The Yellow Jackets had the easiest time in a conference semifinals game on Friday, as they advanced to the ACC title game without even playing the Virginia Cavaliers, who had to withdraw from the tourney due to a positive COVID-19 test. Prior to that, Georgia Tech defeated the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday, 70-66. The Yellow Jackets have been among the hottest teams in the nation right now, as they have carried over their winning form from the regular season into the ACC tourney. They are currently on a seven-game undefeated streak, and while Florida State is the favorite in Saturday’s conference title game, Georgia Tech has had a win this season against the Seminoles. Georgia Tech defeated the ‘Noles back on Jan. 30 at home, 76-65, thanks in large part to the Yellow Jackets’ stingy defense that held Florida State down to just 42.9 percent shooting from the field and forced it to commit 20 turnovers. Georgia Tech’s defense is among the most disruptive in Division I basketball, as it is, in fact, fourth nationally with a 12.8 defensive steal percentage and first in the ACC in the regular season with 9.0 steals per contest.
Georgia Tech is 7-1 against the spread in its last eight games overall.
Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (-4)
Record: 16-5 Overall / 11-4 Conference
Florida State was not going to allow the North Carolina Tar Heels to use it as a resume-booster for Selection Sunday, as the Seminoles eliminated Roy Williams’ boys from the ACC tourney with a 76-73 win on Friday. The Seminoles managed to score a win despite hitting only 47.5 percent of their shots inside the arc. Thats’ a testament to Florida State’s ability to find ways to win when its offense isn’t clicking. In this case, the Seminoles turned to their defense, as North Carolina had a hard time scoring, shooting just 33.8 percent from the field. When Florida State beat the Yellow Jackets on the road back on Dec. 15, Georgia Tech was held down to only 43.1 percent shooting from the floor and 5 of 20 from behind the arc. Florida State’s offense will always be a threat, regardless of what defense is in front of it, as the Seminoles are 29th nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency and tops in the ACC with 80.5 points per game.
The over is 5-2 in Florida State’s last seven games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Florida State wins, 74-71.
