Offensive Edge – Germany

2016-Summer-Olympics---News-Banners-250x130-V1

Germany was able to impose its will offensively in its opening group game against Mexico. The Germans dominated possession (62 percent) and outshot the Mexicans, 20-13. They were only able to get four shots on target, though.

Their promising young forwards Max Meyer and Davie Selke did combine for seven shots against Mexico, and should remain fairly active in front of goal.

On the other side, South Korea’s 8-0 win, while impressive-looking, should be taken with a grain of salt. It was against Fiji, after all. Nevertheless, it’s still a small taste of what the South Koreans are capable of.

It speaks to the amount of firepower they have that they didn’t even need star striker Son Heung-min to start. Ryu Seung-Woo, who plays for Germany’s Bayern Leverkusen, starred in that match by grabbing a hat-trick. Son, who also spent some time playing in Leverkusen, should be fresh and ready to go to face the talented Germans.

Defensive Edge – Germany

Not only do the Germans – +600 contenders to win the gold medal – have the more talented defensive players, they are also the much more tactically astute team. The midfield trio of Sven and Lars Bender with Leon Goretzka was a major factor in their ability to control the match against Mexico so well. They should be able to do more of the same against a South Korean squad that is a bit lightweight in the middle of the park.

The South Koreans, on the other hand, are merely adequate at the back. 24-year-old Captain Jang Hyun-soo already has 26 caps for the senior squad, and will provide some much-needed experience and leadership along the backline. Prior to their clean sheet against Fiji, though, the South Koreans had conceded five goals in three warm-up friendlies.

Writer’s Prediction: Germany gets all three points with a 3-1 win over South Korea.
