How to Bet on the NFL at TopBet
Spread
Spread betting is the most popular way to bet on the NFL. You’ve probably seen numbers like +3 or -2.5 next to some teams. That’s called the “spread.”
When a team has a spread with a “-” sign, it’s the favorite. To win the bet, the favorite’s margin of victory must be greater than the spread. So if you bet on the Green Bay Packers as-3 favorites, they need to win by four or more points to cover the spread and win.
Meanwhile, when a team has a spread with a “+” sign, it’s the underdog. To win the bet, the underdog must either win the game outright, or at least lose by an amount that isn’t more than the spread. So if you bet on the Packers as +7 favorites and they lose 21-15, your bet still wins because they only lost by six points.
If the margin of victory lands directly on the spread, it’s considered a push and you get your money back. However, if there’s a .5 in the spread, it’s not possible to push.
Over/Under or Total
The total refers simply to the combined number of points the two teams scored in a given game. So if the Packers beat the Seahawks, 23-17, the total is 40.
The objective of the over/under or total bet is to determine whether the total will be higher or lower than the line which is set by the oddsmakers. So if the total for a given game is 40.5 and you bet the over, the total must be 41 or more for that bet to win. Meanwhile, it has to go 40 or below for the under to win.
Moneyline
The moneyline is pretty straightforward: all you need to do is pick which team you think will win the game. Once again, there will be favorites and underdogs. And since the favorites are the better teams, they will have “higher” odds since they are more likely to win. That means you won’t win as much money from a moneyline bet on the favorites as you will if you correctly pick and underdog to win.
If you bet on the Cowboys as -250 favorites, what this means is you must bet $250 to get $100 if the Cowboys do win. Meanwhile, if the Cowboys are +300 underdogs, a $100 bet on them could yield $300.
Live Betting
TopBet offers live betting for NFL football. The concept of live betting is pretty self-explanatory. If in the past you could only bet before a game, live betting allows you to continue to bet on the spread, over/under, and moneyline once a game has already begun and while it’s still ongoing.
However, those odds will now reflect what has happened during the game, and will continue to update in real time as the game unfolds.
Prop Betting
A prop bet is simply a bet on whether or not something will occur. An example of a prop bet is if Tom Brady throws an interception or not. “Yes” will have odds based on the likelihood of that happening as will “No.” Obviously, you win the bet based on whether or not Brady does throw a pick.
From individual player props to coach, team, and game props, there are several types of prop bets that will become available throughout the season.
Parlay
A parlay is a combination of two or more spread, over/under, and/or moneyline bets, all of which have to be correct in order for you to win. Since it’s much tougher to get several bets right, the potential amount of a winning parlay is much greater than a bunch of single bets.
The NFL is a perfect sport to bet on with parlays since most of the games happen on the same day. Top Bet offers several parlay options for players to take part in all NFL season.
The parlay challenge has already pre-picked games, so the players just need to pick those games correctly in order to win big sums.
The parlay card provides a wide list of games and the player has the option of which games to include in the parlay.
And finally, the teaser challenge is similar to the parlay challenge, with the only difference being that the spreads will be more favorably adjusted, meaning the potential payout won’t be quite as high.
