The Colts will be unleashing Philip Rivers as their new starting quarterback after a year of having Jacoby Brissett under center. In Rivers, the Colts are getting a better option at the position, albeit an aging one. Last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, Rivers passed for 4,615 yards and 23 touchdowns with 20 interceptions. Rivers struggled last year with turnovers partly due to his team’s bad offensive line play, but that’s unlikely to be a problem this season for him, as the Colts have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. The rushing attack of the Colts that was fifth last season with 133.1 rushing yard per game should flourish again, as it got a new blood in Jonathan Taylor via the draft. Taylor and Marlon Mack should have a field day running circles against Jacksonville’s defense that surrendered 264 rushing yards in Indianapolis’ 33-13 home win against the Jags in Week 11 of last season. The Colts also added a solid piece to their defense by trading for San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
The under is 6-4 in the Colts’ last 10 road games.
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+7.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Jaguars would definitely struggle to say with a straight face that they aren’t tanking this season, as most all the things they’ve done in the offseason suggest that their eyes are not on the Vince Lombardi Trophy but on Trevor Lawrence. The Jags let go Nick Foles, Calais Campbell, AJ Bouye, Yannick Ngakoue, and Leonard Fournette to name some. The offense will remain under the direction of Gardner Minshew on the field, and he’ll be relying on DJ Chark, Chris Conley, and rookie Lavishka Shenault Jr. downfield, while James Robinson takes over the RB1 slot left by Fournette. The Jaguars also added Tyler Eifert, who used to be one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Although the loss of talent on defense is severe, the Jags managed to draft cornerback CJ Henderson and defensive end K’Lavon Chaisson and add former Cleveland Browns star, Joe Schobert.
The Jaguars are 8-1-1 against the spread in their last 10 meetings with the Colts.
Writer’s Prediction
The Colts win, 33-14.
