Betting on the Iowa State Cyclones (odds)
Record: 22-12 Overall/7-11 Conference
A season ago, Iowa State won just two games overall and went winless in Big 12 play. Today, the Cyclones are preparing for a Sweet Sixteen game on Friday against an also-unlikely third-round game. The Cyclones scored an upset in the second round by defeating the Wisconsin Badgers, 54-49. Gabe Kalscheur led the Cyclones in that game with 22 points to go with two steals. But it was Iowa State’s suffocating defense that really made life hard for the Badgers, who shot just 29.8 percent from the field. Defense has been the meal ticket this season for the Cyclones. They are fifth in the nation with just 88.5 points allowed per 100 possessions and fourth in opponents’ turnover rate (24.7%). That defensive performance is a strong message for the Hurricanes. But don’t forget about Iowa State’s offense which could shine brighter this time around, considering the fact that Miami is just 298th in the nation in effective field goal percentage defense (52.9%).
Iowa State is 3-1 against the spread in its last four games overall.
Betting on the Miami Hurricanes (odds)
Record: 25-10 Overall/14-6 Conference
Jim Larranaga is working his March Madness magic again. Larranaga, who coached the famed George Mason Patriots team that made a run to the Final Four in the 2006 NCAA, has steered the Hurricanes to the Sweet Sixteen round after Miami defeated the 2-seed Auburn Tigers in the second round. It was a huge morale-booster of a victory for the Hurricanes, especially when considering the fact that Auburn at point this season was No. 1 overall in the AP Poll rankings. Miami frustrated the Tigers with its scrappy defense that forced 13 turnovers and held Auburn to just 30.4 percent shooting from the field. As mentioned, the Hurricanes are not an elite team defensively, but their performance on that end of the floor versus Auburn could be the start of a turnaround. In any case, the Hurricanes’ offense will be something to really watch out for, with guys like Kameron McGusty and Jordan Miller carrying the load for Miami, McGusty had 21 points in the Auburn game.
Miami is 6-1 against the spread in its last seven games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Iowa State wins, 69-67.
