Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+4.5)
The Jaguars gave interim coach Doug Marrone a good debut win, as they blew out the Tennessee Titans in Week 16, 38-17. Blake Bortles had his best game in a while, throwing for 325 yards on 26-for-38 passing (68 percent). He connected with Allen Robinson nine times for 147 yards, which were season-highs for the receiver.
It was the team’s biggest and most impressive win in their disappointing 2016 campaign. The passing game was touted to rose a couple of tiers higher, but could only produce 229.3 YPG (23rd in the league). The same can be said about the running backs, particularly TJ Yeldon and Chris Ivory. The two are underperforming and could only lead the team into gaining 96.6 yards on the ground (25th in the league). Both are also hurt heading into Week 17 and currently considered questionable.
On defending the pass, the Jaguars are only giving up 210.2 YPG (third in the league), but have a league-worst six interceptions. For the run, they are in the middle of the pack (107.3 YPG, 13th in the league), although they’re loading up the box well in the past few weeks, as four of their six opponents only ran for 85 yards or fewer.
We’ll see if they can close out the year well. In their previous encounter with the Colts, they jumped into a good lead in the second quarter and was in full control for the whole game, and went on to win, 30-27. Bortles passed for 207 yards and a pair of TDs, while also rushing for 36 yards.
The Jags are 1-6 on the road this season (4-3 ATS).
Betting on the Indianapolis Colts (-4.5)
The Colts continued their consistently inconsistent campaign this past Sunday. They didn’t break their season-long trend of alternating wins and losses by following their 34-6 rout of the Vikes with a 33-25 loss to the Raiders.
They will enter the season finale with a 7-8 card, and will miss the playoffs for the second straight year.
In trying to end the season with a victory, expect an Andrew Luck that’s eager to sling it at any given down. Through Luck, Indy is ranking seventh in passing yards, with a 260.8 average. He and Hilton form one of the top QB-WR tandems in the NFL, as the two have connected for over 1,300 yards this season, along with six TDs.
The team’s other key pass-catchers, however, namely Donte Moncrief, Jack Doyle, and Dwyane Allen, should also give some damage to the opposition. Moncrief (shoulder) is questionable for Week 17, but should he play, he’s the clear number two guy for the Colts passing attack. The third-year wideout has scored a touchdown in seven of his nine games this season.
Defensively, they have been awful all year. They are 24th in passing yards (260.5) and 23rd in rushing yards (116.2) allowed per game, while also being 24th in points given up (24.8).
In the aforementioned loss to the Jaguars, Andrew Luck went 27-for-42 for 242 yards and two TDs, but was sacked six times.
The Colts are 3-4 SU and ATS at home this season.
Writer’s Prediction
