Wimbledon-2016_250x130

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga barged into the second round of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships with a resounding 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Spaniard Inigo Cervantes on Tuesday. It was an excellent performance by Tsonga who maintained his perfect record of never losing in the first round in nine visits to the All England Club.

Tsonga was simply unstoppable in the win against Cervantes, blasting a whopping 41 winners. The Frenchman also won 46 of his 54 first-serve points for a remarkable 85 percent success rate. What proved to be the difference in the match, however, was Tsonga’s solid net play. He won 18 of his 29 net points against Cervantes in the opening round.

Tsonga will look to sustain the momentum of that huge victory when he takes on unseeded Juan Monaco in the second round. He will fancy his chances of doing just that as he has fared extremely well against the Argentinian in the past. Tsonga has won his last five meetings with Monaco, with two of those victories coming in Grand Slam tournaments.

Tsonga is 7-3 in his last 10 matches.

Betting on Juan Monaco (+450)

Juan Monaco booked a place in the second round of Wimbledon with a gritty 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Taro Daniel on Tuesday. This is the fourth time in his career that Monaco has reached the round of 64 at the All England Club. Things are bound to get tougher, though, for the 32-year-old as he will next face former Wimbledon semifinalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

For Monaco to grab the upset, he will need to continue his excellent play on the receiving end. He won 44 percent of his receiving points against Daniel with Monaco converting seven of his 10 break point chances. Monaco will also take heart in the fact that he’s hitting it beautifully from the baseline in this year’s event. He recorded 42 winners in the opening round.

That being said, Monaco will need to limit his miscues if he is to advance to the round of 32. He committed a whopping 75 unforced errors in the four-set win against Daniel. That kind of performance simply won’t do against Tsonga who won 37 percent of his receiving points on Tuesday.

Monaco is 7-3 in his last 10 matches.
