Betting on the Los Angeles Clippers (-7)
The Clippers’ seven-game win streak came to an end on Wednesday as the Grizzlies brought them down at Staples Center, 111-107. L.A. now falls to 10-2 (9-3 against the spread). The Clips’ outstanding defense faltered as it gave up a season-high in points to the Grizz, who shot a sizzling 15-of-26 from 3-point range.
Despite an off-night from Chris Paul (9 points, 6 assists), the Clippers still managed to fight back from an early deficit behind Blake Griffin (25 points) and J.J. Redick (29 points, seven 3s). Griffin has now scored 20 or more points in five straight games.
The Clippers offense should have no problems cutting through what is still an ill-disciplined Kings defense. Meanwhile, look for the defense, which is still No. 1 in the NBA points allowed (93.5) despite the Grizzlies’ outburst, to bounce back and slow down Sacramento’s Cousins-centric attack.
Sacramento may have a new arena, but the Clippers have owned the Kings on their own floor in recent years. L.A. is 9-1 (7-3 against the spread) in its last 10 visits to Sacramento.
Betting on the Sacramento Kings (+7)
The Sacramento Kings are off to another slow start. They are now 4-8 (6-5-1 ATS) after dropping their last three games in a row to the Lakers (101-91), Blazers (122-120, OT), and Spurs (110-105). Credit the Kings, though, for fighting to the end and at least covering against the Spurs.
DeMarcus Cousins had another big game against San Antonio as he led the team with 26 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists. Cousins just continues to put up big numbers. He’s scored 26 or more points in six of eight games in November.
The team’s offense is below average despite Cousins’ efforts. The team is at the bottom third of the league averaging just 100 points per game. However, it’s the team’s defense which remains a bigger issue. The Kings now have the second-worst defensive rating in the league, giving up 107.6 points per 100 possessions.
That defense, coupled with the Clippers’ efficient offense, could take the total over once again. The over has gone 6-1 in the Kings’ last seven meetings with L.A.
Writer’s Prediction
The Clippers (-7) bounce back to top the Kings, 101-90.
