Luke Walton watched his young troops lose by 40 points to the Spurs on Thursday night. There was barely anything good that the Lakers can take away from that setback, except Julius Randle’s solid performance—22 points, six rebounds with five assists.

On defense, the Lakers, as always, were at an impasse on how to stop a hot-shooting San Antonio team that piled up a season-high 134 points on 60.5 percent shooting. LA’s now lost back-to-back games by an average margin of 30.5 points. And yes, you read that correctly.

They now battle the Clips, another squad that’s been lighting up the scoreboard lately. Don’t expect the purple and gold make this even close as long as they continue playing high-school-level defense. The Lakers are allowing at least 110 points per game, currently the fifth-most in the league.

The Lakers put together one of their best games of the season in their first meeting with the Clips, though. A season-high of seven Lakers players scored in double digits with Nick Young and Timofey Mozgov each collecting 19 points to lead the team.

Betting on the Los Angeles Clippers (27-14)

It’s been a perfect year for the Clips thus far. They’re 5-0 this month and are in good position to remain unbeaten with a very favorable matchup against their Staples Center co-tenants in the Lakers, who have lost their previous two games.

However, the Clippers can’t get complacent after dropping this season’s first meeting with the purple and gold back on Christmas Day, 111-102. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin didn’t suit up in that game, but that’s still no excuse to lose to a defensively-challenged and inconsistent Lakers group.

With Paul back healthy, he should be able to resoundingly get the offense going and eventually overwhelm their cross-town rival. The 31-year-old veteran is averaging 17.0 points and 12.0 assists since returning from a hamstring injury.

The Clips have also piled up 105 or more points in four of their last five outings, during which J.J. Redick has been scorching hot from down town (17-for-39).
