It wasn’t pretty, but the Rams got the job done nonetheless last Sunday, as they defeated the New York Giants on the road, 17-9. The Rams’ offense did not particularly take flight and reflect the perception that head coach Sean McVay is an offensive genius, with the team producing just 240 total yards. But it also showed that the Rams are capable of winning ugly games, which could be the case again next Sunday against the struggling Washington squad. Los Angeles’ defense can come away from Week 5 looking good against Dwayne Haskins or whichever quarterback Washington decides to play. The Rams’ pass rush woke up in the Giants game, recording five sacks which resulted in 31 lost yards for Daniel Jones and company. Washington’s pass protection isn’t that great, with Haskins already taking 13 sacks this season — tied for third-most in the NFL, as of this writing.
The Rams are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games away from home.
Betting on the Washington Football Team (+3.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-3
That Week 1 win over the Philadelphia Eagles seems so long ago for Washington. Now, Washington is on a three-game losing skid following a 31-17 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4. Dwyane Haskins Jr. is far from instilling confidence in Washington that he’s the long-term answer under center, but at least, he did better this time around. He passed for 314 yards on 32-of-45 completions while getting sacked three times for a loss of 40 yards. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, despite the loss, showed he’s one of the most exciting downfield playmakers in the game today, as he racked up 118 receiving yards on 10 catches. On the season, McLaurin 387 receiving yards — fifth in the NFL — with just a touchdown on only 216 receptions. As long as McLaurin is on the field, Haskins will have a dangerous weapon to help move the chains for Washington’s offense that is averaging just 19.8 points per game. The key for Washington against the Rams is for its defense to keep the game close just like the Giants did last week. Washington’s pass rush could help there, as it is third in the league with 10 sacks.
The over is 7-3 in Washington’s last 10 games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rams win, 30-17.
