Betting on the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks (+34.5)

The Louisiana Monroe Warhawks had a chance to kick off their 2017 season on a high note, but they failed to do so after falling to the Memphis Tigers in Week 1, 37-29.

With Garrett Smith and Caleb Evans sharing reps at quarterback, Louisiana Monroe couldn’t generate any momentum on offense against Memphis. The two combined for just 279 yards on 21-of-37 passing, with each QB finding the end zone only by the fourth quarter and be denied of a comeback.

What’s more concerning about these Warhawks is their rushing defense, as the Tigers had a pair of 100-yard rushers and finished with a total of 319 rushing yards and four TDs as a team. This is unacceptable to say the least, especially with Florida State looking to run the ball more this Saturday with their starting QB on the shelf.

On the other hand, the Warhawks are in position to take advantage of a downtrodden Seminoles team this Saturday. Which leads us to…

Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (-34.5)

As if facing the Alabama Crimson Tide right off the bat wasn’t enough, the No. 3 Florida State Seminoles are now in deeper trouble following Week 1’s 24-7 loss to the Tide.

Second-year quarterback Deondre Francois looked rather shaky in his season debut, completing just 19 of 33 passes for 210 yards, one touchdown and two picks. Those two interceptions were brutal, but not more so than Francois tearing a patellar tendon in his right knee late in the loss to put his 2017 campaign to an abrupt halt.

As luck would have it, though, the Seminoles can at least take comfort from the fact that they’ll be facing a mediocre opponent in Louisiana Monroe this weekend. Three of the four remaining QBs on FSU’s roster are freshmen, and perhaps all of Francois’ backups will see playing time against the Warhawks to see who can lead the team for the rest of the season.

Despite all of the team’s recent misfortunes, Florida State still has superior depth in talent compared to their next opponent, particularly on defense. Mind you that the team’s D managed to hold Alabama to just 269 offensive yards.

The first win of the season is still at hand, but the ‘Noles may not be as convincing in defeating the Warhawks as they have yet to figure out how to continue their campaign without their supposed starting QB.

Writer’s Prediction

FSU pulls away with a much-needed victory, but not enough to cover the huge spread. Louisiana Monroe covers +34.5 with a final score of 31-7.
