Betting on the LSU Tigers (-10)
The boys from Baton Rouge have one thing in mind: to win the national championship. With an experienced coach in Les Miles and arguably the best running back in the nation in the form of Leonard Fournette, the Tigers have the essential tools to be a serious contender.Fournette is clearly the backbone of LSU’s offense. He led the nation last year in rushing yards per game (162.75) and scored 22 rushing touchdowns. He’s just so good that he’s expected to be a problem even for Wisconsin’s defense that was no. 1 last season in scoring defense.
Even with Fournette in the backfield, the Tigers need their passing game to step up to prevent them from being too predictable. Quarterback Brandon Harris figures to use his arm more a year after LSU made just 36.80 percent of their plays off passing.
It should help LSU break down Wisconsin’s defense now that former Badgers defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is under the Tigers’ payroll. Aranda’s familiarity with some of Wisconsin’s players is a valuable asset for LSU heading into this game.
LSU is 6-4 ATS in its last 10 games when it’s the favorite by at least eight points.
Betting on the Wisconsin Badgers (+10)
Sure, LSU has Fournette, but it would be a mistake for the Tigers to forget about Wisconsin’s Corey Clement. It’s easy to overlook Clement, as the running back missed a big chunk of last season because of an injury.
Still, Clement has shown enough pop in his game before he got injured to send LSU’s defense scrambling any time he gets the ball. Clement had 949 rushing yards in 2014 to go with nine touchdowns. He played in four games last season, raking in 221 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Clement’s job should be less daunting against LSU with Wisconsin returning seven offensive line pieces that had starting experience.
As for their defense, the Badgers have lost two top tier talents with linebacker Joe Schobert and safety Michael Caputo gone.
Nevertheless, there’s sufficient talent on the stop unit to slow down LSU. For one, the Badgers still have Vince Biegel, who recorded eight sacks last season. The cornerback position is also deep with Derrick Sojourn Shelton anchoring the defense downfield. Wisconsin was 59th in 2015 against the air with 228.3 passing yards allowed per game.
Wisconsin is 8-2 SU in its last 10 games as the home team.
