Betting on Manchester City (-134)
Manchester City will look to leapfrog leaders Manchester United in the Premier League standings when they host Liverpool this coming Saturday. A victory for Pep Guardiola would send City top – at least before Manchester United play later in the day. The Citizens are still looking for their first home win of the season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Everton in their opener at the Etihad Stadium.
Raheem Sterling is suspended for this matchup as a result of his controversial red card at Bournemouth. Sterling sank the Cherries with a dramatic winner in the seventh minute of injury time but was shown the door when he celebrated with the traveling City supporters. With Sterling sidelined, the onus is on Sergio Aguero to carry the scoring cudgels for City. He has scored in all five of his Premier League appearances against Liverpool at the Etihad. Aguero will need to be at his best, though, against the Reds who have kept clean sheets in six of their last seven Premier League matches.
Vincent Kompany’s a doubt for Saturday’s clash after picking up a minor calf injury while playing for Belgium. The good news for City’s defense is that Kyle Walker is available once again after serving a one-match ban. He became the most expensive English player of all time after signing for Manchester City this past summer.
Betting on Liverpool (+290)
Liverpool stretched their unbeaten run in the Premier League to three matches with a straightforward 4-0 victory over Arsenal before the international break. It was a pivotal result for the Reds who remained two points adrift of leaders Manchester United in the title race. Jurgen Klopp’s men can go top of the table with a victory over Manchester City this coming Saturday. Liverpool will fancy their chances of doing just that as they have fared extremely well against the Citizens of late. The Reds are unbeaten in each of their last five league matches against City. They have outscored City, 11-3, during this span.
For the Reds to extend their dominance this coming weekend, they will need to continue their excellent play on the offensive end. Liverpool have scored eight goals in the Premier League this season, second-best in the English top flight. The Reds will be licking their chops at the prospect of facing Pep Guardiola’s men as they have scored in 13 successive games against City in all competitions. Expected to lead Liverpool’s attack against City is Mohamed Salah. The 25-year-old Egyptian has scored more goals for Liverpool this season (three) than he managed in a year at Chelsea. Deadline-day signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also in line for his Liverpool debut after his blockbuster £35 million transfer from Arsenal.
