There’s no stopping Ja Morant’s rise to superstardom. In Game 5, the high-flying Morant put the Grizzlies on his back and led the team to a pivotal victory that put them a win away from booking a ticket to the second round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs. Morant had been dealing with inconsistency, but his showing in Game 5 should have given him the runway to get things going for the rest of the series. Morant finished that game with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and 9 assists. Memphis’ shot just 7/258 from deep in Game 5, but continued to dominate inside scoring with 62 points in the paint to just 38 by Minnesota. The Grizzlies can be expected to continue having success attacking the rim and also get back their touch from behind the arc. They drilled 13.3 threes on 38.8 percent shooting in the three games prior to Game 5.
The Grizzlies are 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 games after taking two days of rest.
Betting on the Minnesota Timberwolves (odds)
Regular Season Record: 46-36
Minnesota is giving the Grizzlies a tough time, but the Timberwolves are not here for moral victories. To force a Game 7, though, Karl-Anthony Towns and company are going to need to improve on securing the ball. They have been outrebounded in each game of this matchup outside of the series opener. Speaking of Towns, the talented big man poured in 28 points with 12 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in 35 minutes of action in Game 5. So far in the series, KAT is putting up averages of 22.6 points and 11.0 rebounds, while making 52.6 percent of his shots from behind the arc. Minnesota must also have to be better in handling possessions, as the Timberwolves are turning the ball over almost 20 times per contest, resulting in a ton of extra possessions for a Memphis team that is already dominating in offensive rebounding.
The Timberwolves are 9-4 against the spread in their last 13 home games versus a team with a winning record on the road.
Writer’s Prediction
The Grizzlies win, 119-112.
