Betting on the Miami Marlins (34-31)

Justin Nicolino (2-3, 4.76 ERA) is out for redemption today, when he heads to the mound for the series finale against the San Diego Padres.

MLB 250x Banner

Nicolino is coming off a very ugly start versus the D-Backs last Friday, during which he surrendered five earned runs and 12 hits across 5 2/3 innings. He did strikeout six batters in that game, though.

Moreover, the 24-year-old southpaw is only 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and .310 opponents’ batting average through four road starts this year. This will also be the first time that he’ll be facing the Padres.

So with that, it’s honestly hard to expect a solid performance from Nicolino later. And hence, the Marlins, who are priced at +1,200 to take home the NL East division crown, better be ready to back him up with all the runs that they can muster at the plate.

Look to Martin Prado to lead the charge in doing so. He is, after all, the team leading batter (.333) and hitter (81). The 32-year-old third baseman also marches into Petco Park aiming to extend his eight-game hitting streak.

Miami is 5-5 SU in its last 10 road games.

Betting on the San Diego Padres (26-40)

The San Diego Padres will be hoping to put an end to their four-game losing streak when they send Luis Perdomo (1-2, 9.50 ERA) on the mound for this afternoon’s series finale against the Miami Marlins.

Perdomo is set to make just his third start overall this season. In his last time out, the 23-year-old Rule-5 rookie relieved the injured Andrew Cashner and registered 5 2/3 innings of three-run ball along with seven K’s to help the Padres beat the Rockies last Friday, 7-5.  There’s no question that Perdomo’s out to prove later that that performance was no fluke at all.

As for the offense, the Padres will rely on the bats of Jon Jay and Matt Kemp. Both have had a pretty solid season thus far.

Jay boasts team-highs in batting average (.286), OBP (.331) and hits (73), while Matt Kemp leads the way in homers (15) and is 7-of-15 in his last four games.

San Diego is 5-5 SU in its previous 10 home games.
