Betting on the Minnesota Timberwolves (+7)

Regular Season Record: 49-33

The Timberwolves stole a win on the road right away in the series, as they took Game 2 via a 99-93 score. Utah capitalized in the absence of Luka Doncic. Bojan Bogdanovic scattered 26 points, while Donovan Mitchell erupted for 32 points. Rudy Gobert scored just five points but grabbed 17 rebounds. It was actually the Timberwolves’s rebounding that titled the tide towards their favor. Utah shot just 43.4 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from deep but had 13 offensive rebounds and 53 total rebounds to just 34 by Dallas. As long as the Mavs have no answer for Gobert, Mitchell and company will have all the confidence in the world to take shots, knowing their relatively high chances of keeping possessions after misses. On the other side, Utah’s defense and defensive rebounding limited the Mavs to just 76 attempts from the field—way lower than Dallas’ regular-season average of 85.0 FG/G which was already 27th fewest in the NBA.

The Timberwolves are 7-2 against the spread in their last nine playoff games as the favorite.

Betting on the Memphis Grizzlies (-7)

Regular Season Record: 52-30

The Grizzlies will have to look past their debacle in Game 1. This is a team that’s proven plenty of naysayers wrong this season. It’s time to the critics why they are wrong about Memphis again. Ja Morant scored 32 points in Game 1 and should play with even more energy in Game 2 after tweeting what appeared to be a “taking notes” emoji following the loss to Minnesota. Jaren Jackson Jr. showed why he’s one of the best defensive players in the league when he posted seven blocks in Game 1 to go with 12 points. He is also due to be better on offense after making just four shots on 13 attempts. And even with JJJ struggling, the Grizzlies scored more points in the paint than Minnesota, 60-50. Perhaps Jackson will have to cut down on his shots from deep and opt to be more aggressive in taking higher-percentage shots.

The Grizzlies are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games overall.

Writer’s Prediction

The Grizzlies win, 121-114.
