It’s time to make money off baseball again, folks. Here are five of the best baseball games to bet on today.
Locking horns tonight are the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels. Before you bet the game to go over since these are two of the highest scoring teams in the majors, consider that a pair of Cy Young candidates in Max Scherzer and Garrett Richards are going to face off in the first game of this four-game set. You can read a complete preview of that game here.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Royals match will also feature top-performing pitchers, albeit with lesser hype. Find out more about those games and three more others below.
[sc:MLBArticles ]MLB Picks and Predictions for Thursday, July 24, 2014
Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves (7:10 PM ET)
Line: Miami Marlins (+135) at Atlanta Braves (-150); total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines
Henderson Alvarez (6-5, 2.64 ERA) pitched great last month, ending June with a fantastic 3-0 slate and a 1.05 ERA. The Venezuelan, though, is having trouble in July, losing twice in three starts while accumulating an ERA of 4.15. Nevertheless, the Marlins are 5-1 in Henderson’s last six road starts. Alvarez will be matched up against Aaron Harang (9-6, 3.36 ERA). The Braves are 4-0 in Harang’s last four starts overall.
Writer’s prediction: An in-form Harang helps the Braves fish off a win over the Marlins.
Cleveland Indians vs. Kansas City Royals (8:10 PM ET)
Line: Cleveland Indians (-114) at Kansas City Royals (+104); total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines
[sc:MLB240banner ]The Indians have all the reason to be optimistic in their game tonight as they send Corey Kluber (10-6, 2.95 ERA) to the mound. Cleveland hasn’t lost in all of Kluber’s last three starts, wherein the right-hander has struck out 25 total batters.
Like Kluber, Kansas City’s Danny Duffy (5-10, 2.66) has been remarkable on mound, but a lack of run support has caused him to go 0-3 in his last three starts. The Royals are putting up just 2.66 runs per nine innings when Duffy is on the mound – the worst in the American League. The Royals are also averaging just 2.2 runs in their last five games, all of which have gone under the totals.
Writer’s prediction: Kansas City clobbers Kluber, beats the Indians.
New York Mets vs. Milwaukee Brewers (8:10 PM ET)
Line: New York Mets (+144) at Milwaukee Brewers (-144); total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines
Dillon Gee (4-2, 2.92 ERA) has a tough act to follow after Bartolo Colon nearly tossed a perfect game in a 3-2 Mets win last night against the Seattle Mariners for their second win in a row.
The Mets are 6-2 in Gee’s last eight road starts. Standing in the way of the Mets are the Brewers, who appear to have regained their bearings after going 2-11 in the last 13 games before the All-Star break. The Brewers are 3-0 in their last three games. They are also 4-0 in their last four games in Miller Park.
Writer’s prediction: The Brewers defeat visiting Mets.

Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Angels (10:05 PM ET)
Line: Tampa Bay Rays (+118) at Los Angeles Angels (-128); total: 7.0 – see all MLB lines
Two of the best scoring teams in the majors this month are set to meet tonight as the Tigers and Angels begin a four-game series. Los Angeles has collected a majors-best 110 runs this month, while the Tigers are second with 102.
However, with Max Scherzer (11-3, 3.34 ERA) and Garrett Richards (11-2, 2.47 ERA) facing off in the first game, runs are likely to come at a premium. Scherzer is 3-0 with a 1.87 ERA in his last five starts, while Richards carries a 7-0 record with a 1.25 ERA over his last nine starts.
Writer’s prediction: Los Angeles wins in a low-scoring game.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Seattle Mariners (10:10 PM ET)
Line: Baltimore Orioles (+125) at Seattle Mariners (-135); total: 7.0 – see all MLB lines
With a league-worst batting average of .209 since the start of the second half, the Orioles now have a growing concern over their struggling offense. Starter Wei-Yin Chen (10-3, 4.21 ERA) should just be as worried himself, having benefited from a rich run support (6.36 per game) to win games despite his high ERA.
Meanwhile, the Mariners will turn to Hisashi Iwakuma (8-4, 2.95), who’s been lights-out for Seattle in his previous starts. The Mariners are 3-1 in his last four starts, wherein he went 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA.
Writer’s prediction: Baltimore survives Iwakuma, wins against Mariners.
