Betting on the New York Knicks

The New York Knicks have officially hit the “tank” button on their disastrous season. Already without star Carmelo Anthony, who’s still sitting out due to a knee injury, the Knicks pulled the trigger on a three-way trade which sent wings JR Smith and Iman Shumpert to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

[sc:NBA240banner ]The trade meant Smith was pulled out of their game with the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday. Not that Smith would’ve made much of a difference as the Knicks fell 105-83, their 12th loss in a row (tied for the franchise worst) and 22nd in 23 games. Coupled with the Sixers’ win, the Knicks (5-32) are now owners the NBA’s worst record.

With Melo, Smith, and Amare Stoudemire (knee) either gone or injured, second-year guard Tim Hardaway Jr. is now the team’s leading scorer at 11.1 points per game. Cole Aldrich (11 points and eight rebounds) and Quincy Acy (10 points, six rebounds) have had their moments over the past eight games or so, but their remaining roster doesn’t have too many other bright spots.

The Knicks have failed to cover any of their last seven games.

Betting on the Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards concluded their grueling five-game Southwest road trip with a 92-85 win over the New Orleans Pelicans to end their season-long three-game losing streak. John Wall had 15 points and 12 assists to lead a very balanced Wizards offense which received 41 big points from its bench.

Kris Humphries has remained productive even after being replaced by Nene in the starting lineup. Humphries is averaging 10 points and six rebounds to lead a bench unit averaging 36 points per game, top 10 in the NBA.

Wall averaged just 13.6 points per game during their five-game trip, but he should get back on track against a Knicks team currently in shambles. Wall had 24 points and 11 rebounds at Madison Square Garden on Christmas Day as the Wizards cruised to a 102-91 win despite 34 points from Carmelo Anthony.

Expect a similar bounce-back game from Wall’s backcourt partner, Bradley Beal, who scored just six points on 3-of-10 shooting against the Pelicans. Beal has scored single-digits in three games this season and has averaged almost 30 points in the following game.

Washington is 14-4 (8-10 against the spread) at home this season.

Writer’s Prediction

The Wizards cruise to win and cover at home.
