Betting on the New York Mets (16-20)
The New York Mets’ losing skid is now up to four games after they were handed a three-game sweep on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers. Their most recent loss was easily the roughest, as they gave up a six-run lead by allowing 10 runs in three innings, including five in the eighth, in an 11-9 defeat.
The Mets’ bullpen, which already lost closer Jeurys Familia for up to four months, struggled mightily. All four relievers who came in gave up at least a run.
That bullpen is most likely going to see some more action tonight with Zack Wheeler (2-2, 4.18 ERA) set to start for the Mets. The 26-year-old has completed six or more innings just twice in six starts this season, in large part because he can’t keep his pitch count down.
However, Wheeler’s coming off easily his best outing of the season against his former team, the San Francisco Giants. He gave up just one run on two hits in six innings.
Offensively, the Mets will look to the hot bat of Neil Walker to supply more runs. The slugging second baseman has a six-game hit streak going, and has gone 8 out of his last 13 with 2 homers and 6 RBI in his last three games.
Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (21-18)
After winning the first two games of their four-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Arizona Diamondbacks proceeded to drop the next two games to split the series. Since starting the season strong at 17-11, the D-Backs have gone just 4-7 in their last 11 games.
Zack Godley will look to end that skid as he gets his second start in place of the injured Shelby Miller. The 27-year-old righty was stellar in his most recent start, going seven innings and giving up a single run in a 7-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Godley has one previous start against the Mets in his career, which came last season. He also performed well in that start, as he gave up just two runs in 7.1 innings in a 13-5 D-Backs win.
Meanwhile, Paul Goldschmidt’s bat is once again starting to heat up for the D-Backs. The All-Star slugger has now homered in back-to-back games, including two homers and three RBIs last night.
Writer’s Prediction
The Diamondbacks (-123) do their damage against Wheeler as they snap their mini skid and roll to a home win.
