New York’s losing woes show no sign of abating as the Mets suffered a disappointing 4-3 defeat to San Diego on Thursday. The Mets have now lost 10 of their last 13 outings as they dropped down to 19-26 in the AL Central standings. They now trail the division-leading Washington Nationals by 8.5 games.

With New York struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Jacob deGrom (3-1, 3.56 ERA) to deliver a quality start for the Mets tonight. His start was pushed back to Friday due to a soggy forecast in Queens. He was spectacular in his last start against the Los Angeles Angels, throwing seven shutout innings in a 3-0 victory last Friday. That was the first time in 18 games that a New York Mets pitcher recorded an out in the seventh inning.

DeGrom can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Mets’ offense to wake up from its slumber. They are eighth-worst in the majors in batting average and on-base percentage this campaign. One guy who needs to step up for the Mets is Michael Conforto. He has been doing it all for New York, leading the team not only in batting average but also in homers, RBIs, on-base percentage and hits this season. The Mets’ leadoff hitter went 1-of-5 last night in the loss to the Padres.

The Mets are 0-6 in their last six road games.

Betting on the Pittsburgh Pirates (22-26)

Things are looking up for the Pittsburgh Pirates after grabbing a 9-4 victory against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Ivan Nova tormented the Braves as he came up just short in his bid to become the first pitcher in the majors this season with three complete games. It was a morale-boosting victory for the Bucs who split the four-game series at SunTrust Park after losing the first two contests.

The Bucs will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they lock horns with the Mets in the opening game of their three-game set tonight. Pitching for Pittsburgh in this clash is Chad Kuhl. He has never the faced the Mets in his young career. Kuhl returned to form Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing just one hit and two walks, while striking out five, in five innings. He recorded seven outs on the ground in that 1-0 victory, a very good sign for the sinkerballer.

That performance came after his implosion against the Nationals wherein he allowed six runs on 10 hits in just four innings of action. Given Kuhl’s erratic form, the Bucs’ offense will need to stand tall against the Mets tonight. One guy who needs to contribute for Pittsburgh is Adam Frazier. He has been on fire at the plate of late, batting .409 with two homers and eight RBIs in his last seven games for the Pirates. Frazier has also drawn eight walks during this span. He blasted a three-run homer in yesterday’s win against Atlanta.

The Bucs are 7-3 in their last 10 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Pittsburgh wins a close one, 4-3.
