Betting on the New York Yankees (29-19)

The Yankees fell flat in last night’s series-opener. They lost, 3-2, despite coming in having won five of their last seven and the Orioles owning a significant losing streak.

It wasn’t that bad, though, as they are still sitting atop of the American League-East standings. Also, they were able to score 30 runs in their previous three-game series with the Orioles (April 28-30).

Aaron Judge is still pretty consistent, as he unloaded his league-leading 17th home run of the year in the defeat. He is one of only two AL players (Mike Trout) to place inside the top 18 in home runs, RBIs, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. With Judge and Starlin Castro (62 hits, seven HRs, .319 batting avg.), the Yanks’ offense looks good moving forward.

Luis Severino, meanwhile, is the next Yankee in line to start on the mound. The third-year pitcher is 3-2 with 3.11 ERA in nine starts this season. His 61 strikeouts currently rank him 23rd in the league, and he’s the youngest (23-years-old) in that list. Additionally, he has 14 Ks and only one allowed run in his last two starts (13 innings).

Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (26-23)

Moneyline: +116

Last night’s losing streak-snapping win should feel good, but there’s still a ton of work left for the reeling Orioles, who only had their fourth win in their last 17 games.

Manny Machado, for one, remains to be disappointing. The 24-year-old is yet to deliver consistently this season, and he’s only batting an abysmal .196 in the last three weeks. Further, yesterday’s hitless performance was his sixth in his last 11 outings.

Now that Adam Jones – one of the more productive guys on the team – is day-to-day with an ankle injury, Baltimore is hungrier more than ever to have Machado’s once-explosive batting. The Os are ranking well in various batting stats with him being mediocre for the most part, so they can be scary once he finally wakes up from the slump.

The defense, on the other hand, will be bringing in Chris Tillman for his fifth start of the year (1-1, 4.43 ERA). He has tossed for 20.1 innings this season, allowing 10 runs on 25 hits and nine walks, while retiring 15. The Yanks’ batters are 28-for-103 against him all-time (.272).

Writer’s Prediction

The Yankees return to form, 6-3.
