Betting on the New York Yankees (-105)

Just when we thought that the New York Yankees (69-55) were making an unlikely push for one of the American League’s Wild Card spots, their division rivals in the Baltimore Orioles sent them right back in the dumps.

The Yankees won their last four series – having gone 8-4 with a series victory over Baltimore at that – prior to suffering their third-straight shutout loss to the Orioles on Saturday, 2-0, to deny them a fifth-consecutive series win. In turn, their playoff hopes have gotten even bleaker as well, now that they’re at a rather distant four-and-a-half games behind the final Wild Card slot.

For New York to get back on track, it’ll need to generate runs by any means. However, the team has literally failed to find any firepower at all these past couple of days against the O’s, and only catcher Brian McCann has the evident potential to spark a fire for the Bronx Bombers right now. McCann, who has nine hits and three RBIs in the last seven games, is the only batter that is capable of handling Baltimore’s starter this Sunday in Wade Miley. He has hit .385 in 13 at-bats versus the lefty to go with one dinger and four runs batted-in.

Then again, even with some offense going for the Yanks, they still better pray that Michael Pineda (6-11, 5.12 ERA) has a well-rounded effort this weekend. Pineda’s as unpredictable as they come, though, as the Dominican struck out eight while also giving up five runs in his last start against the Royals. Even worse, he’s also winless in his last four starts.

Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (-105)

As the Yankees find themselves in a downward spiral, the Baltimore Orioles (74-61) are starting to regain their early-season form at the right time. With Saturday’s victory over the Yankees, they are now just two games away from recapturing the helm of the AL East from the Toronto Blue Jays.

We all know that the O’s can hit and hit hard (as evident in their 13 combined runs in the past couple of contests versus New York), but it’s a really pleasant surprise that their pitching has picked up just as well. Closer Zach Britton, in particular, has simply been phenomenal, having just notched his 40th save of the season in as many tries.

However, having Wade Miley (8-11, 5.43 ERA) on the mound this Sunday is not very reassuring. He’s had a rough going after being taking in by Baltimore before the trade deadline, even if he has posted a rather respectable 3.75 ERA in his last two starts.

If Miley does indeed tank in his upcoming appearance, at least the Orioles can still rely on their powerful sluggers to bail them out from a pinch. Five Baltimore batters with over 10 at-bats have hit over .300 lifetime against the Yankees’ Pineda, with J.J. Hardy have gone a cool .500 with three homers and four RBIs against New York’s righty.

Writer’s Prediction

The Orioles (-105) complete the three-game series sweep against the Yankees, 5-1.
