Betting on the New York Yankees (20-9)

Moneyline: -140

The American League-leading Yankees stretched their winning streak to five Monday morning with their exhausting 18-inning, 5-4 escape over the Chicago Cubs. They swept the defending champs after almost collapsing at the bottom of the ninth, where reliever Aroldis Chapman gave up three runs on three hits in just 0.2 innings, including a walk with the bases loaded, allowing a game-tying run. The 48 strikeouts by the two clubs set a new MLB record.

Masahiro Tanaka, who will have his first career matchup with the Reds, is next in line for the starting pitcher duties. The veteran is 4-1 with a 4.46 ERA in six starts this season. He has stitched together four consecutive victories, including a complete game against the Boston Red Sox last April 27th, where he tallied a three-hitter and didn’t allow a run or a walk.

The Yankees’ offense, meanwhile, will continue eyeing the trio of Starlin Castro, Chase Headley, and rising star Aaron Judge for production – Castro and Judge pace the MLB in hits (43) and homers (13), respectively, while Headley’s respectable triple-slash line of .295/.388/.475 is one of the best in his 12-year career.

Betting on the Cincinnati Reds (17-14)

Moneyline: +130

Like the Yanks, the Reds are also winners of five straight. They will be fresh off a three-game domination against the San Francisco Giants, who they outscored in that span, 31-5. Cincy went 41-for-109 in the series, led by Zack Cozart tallying six hits, four RBIs, and five runs.

Expect the overflowing offense to continue moving forward. This has been one of the best batting seasons by the team in recent memory. Cozart is one of six Reds to currently have 30 or more hits on the season – three of which have seven or more homers – and it places Cincinnati inside the top four in hits and RBIs, while also co-leading the league in stolen bases.

As for the defense, Rookie Davis, who has a fitting name because he’s a rookie, will be next starter. He’s 1-1 with an abysmal 7.36 ERA in four starts this season, but he’ll be extra motivated to do better tomorrow since he’ll be facing his former team – the Yankees included him in their 40-man roster in December of 2015 and traded him away for Aroldis Chapman before getting a chance to play.

Cincinnati is 3-1 in Davis’s four starts this season.

Writer’s Prediction

The Reds (+130) overwhelm a tired Yankees club, 8-2.
