Betting on the New York Yankees (38-28)

Moneyline: +102

That’s now five-straight losses for the New York Yankees, who fell to the Oakland Athletics for the third time in as many days on Saturday, 5-2.

Despite losing five consecutive contests, the Yankees have pretty much hung in during those losses. Prior to Saturday, they’ve lost the four previous contests during their skid by no more than two runs.

Replacing the injured CC Sabathia (hamstring) in the starting rotation will be Luis Cessa (0-0, 5.40 ERA), who’ll be making his Major League debut in Sunday’s series finale against the A’s. The Mexican righty’s only outing this season for New York came in May 1st, throwing 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits to the Toronto Blue Jays.

While Cessa leaves little to be desired, the Yanks have reinforcements underway to aid the 25-year-old. Closer Aroldis Chapman will be activated from the disabled list this Sunday and could very well come through in the clutch. Slugger Matt Holliday, who was absent from Saturday’s game with an allergic reaction, is set to return to the batting order as well.

Betting on the Oakland Athletics (30-38)

Moneyline: -112

A rare four-game sweep of the Yankees is at hand for the Oakland Athletics, who’ll look to close out the series on a high this Sunday.

Designated hitter Ryon Healy continued to provide some pop for the A’s, hitting two home runs in Saturday’s win. Healy now has three homers, eight hits and five runs batted-in over his last four outings.

However, the A’s are seeing a slump from one of their more dependable hitters as well. Khris Davis, the team’s leader in RBIs (43) struck out four times in five at-bats Saturday and has just a total of one run scored over the last six games.

To make matters worse, Oakland has to turn to second-year righty Jharel Cotton (3-7, 5.52 ERA) to close out the four-game series. Cotton hasn’t had a winning decision since May 4, and his last outing saw him surrender eight hits and five runs to the Miami Marlins. Even worse is that he’s already faced the Yankees earlier this season in New York, giving up three runs in just 5.2 innings of work.

Writer’s Prediction

The Yankees (-110) put an end to their losing streak and avoid the sweep with a close 4-3 win over the A’s.
