NFL Preseason Week 2 Predictions, Odds and Preview
Thursday, August 18
Atlanta Falcons (+2.5) at Cleveland Browns (-2.5) – 8:00 PM ET
As expected, the Browns didn’t really impress much in Week 1 of the preseason, as what their 17-11 defeat at the hands of the Packers would suggest. Robert Griffin III did not appear comfortable in the pocket, throwing a pick and just one pass of over 10 yards gained in the loss.Meanwhile, the Falcons had a much better showing in their 23-17 victory over the Redskins. Atlanta saw a couple of its rookies stand out above the rest, with wide receiver Aldrick Robinson racking up 118 receiving yards and linebacker Deion Jones coming up big in run stoppage for the D.
Writer’s Prediction: Falcons (+2.5) win, 19-13.
Friday, August 19
Miami Dolphins (+3.5) at Dallas Cowboys (-3.5) – 8:00 PM ET
The Cowboys’ search for a competent backup to Tony Romo may have finally been solved, as rookie quarterback Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State connected on a pair of TDs – one to Dez Bryant and the other to Terrance Williams – in the close 29-28 loss to the Rams this past week. Dallas also saw a burst of life from their special teams unit, which returned the opening kickoff of the contest for a touchdown.
Things do not look as sunny for the Dolphins, though. Miami’s starting unit on offense went three-and-out in the first two possessions of the team’s 27-10 win over the Giants, and it wasn’t until the sixth offensive drive that the second- and third-stringers got the team’s first first down of the contest. It seems that Ryan Tannehill (2-of-4 for just eight passing yards) needs to put in more work this preseason than his backups.
Writer’s Prediction: Cowboys (-3.5) win, 26-18.
Saturday, August 20
Carolina Panthers (+1) at Tennessee Titans (-1) – 3:00 PM ET
Based from Week 1’s 27-10 win over the Chargers, the Tennessee Titans’ running game will be a real threat come the regular season. The three-headed committee of DeMarco Murray, Bishop Sankey and rookie Derrick Henry rumbled for a combined 288 rushing yards and two touchdowns, giving second-year QB Marcus Mariota lots of optimism that the team’s offense won’t entirely fall on his shoulders once more.
On the other hand, the Panthers have got to score more this preseason to see how much depth they have behind Cam Newton and their regular starters. Newton scored the only touchdown for his team in the 22-19 loss to the Ravens, with kicker Graham Gano accounting for the rest of Carolina’s points by way of his four field goals. The Panthers’ support on defense also had a rough outing against Baltimore’s backups, as Colin Jones, Marcus Ball and Trenton Robinson blew a ton of coverage opportunities in the secondary.
Writer’s Prediction: Titans (-1) win, 24-20.
