Betting on the Oakland Athletics (+1.5)
Regular Season Record: 25-49
Paul Blackburn is among the few silver linings on the Athletics, who are drifting further and further away from a postseason spot in the American League. Blackburn is 6-3 with a 2.97 ERA and 1.18 WHIP, and he will look to test his stuff against the hard-hitting Yankees this Monday. He is coming off a forgettable performance, though, giving up 7 earned runs on 10 hits in just 4.0 innings of a 9-0 home loss to the Seattle Mariners. Nevertheless, he has tamed teams luke the San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Tampa Bay Rays this season. One key thing to know about Blackburn too is that he is 5-0 with a 1.00 ERA in eight road starts to date this season.
Betting on the New York Yankees (-1.5)
Regular Season Record: 53-20
The Bronx Bombers will counbter Paul Blackburn with Jordan Montgomery, who is having himself quite a season. He enters Game 1 of this series against the Athletic carrying a 3-1 record with a 2.97 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 14 starts. The A’s arearguably the worst team in terms of offense in the majors. They are last in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, and on-base plus slugging. Montgomery should be able to take care of business this Monday, but if he can’t, he can lean on the Yankees’ big bats to save him. New York is top five in the majors in both wOBA and wRC+, and are tops overall in home runs. New York’s bullpen is also elite, so the Yankees are expected to dominate the A’s on all fronts.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yankees win, 4-1.
