Betting on the Oakland Raiders (1-3)
The Raiders are losers no more, at least during Week 4, when they notched their first victory of the season by downing the Cleveland Browns in a come-from-behind 45-42 overtime win. The Raiders showed their poise and resiliency in that game. They were down by as many as 14 points, but Derek Carr and company refused to give up. Carr threw for 437 yards and four touchdowns against a couple of interceptions on 35-of-58 completions. Marshawn Lynch, meanwhile, rushed 20 times for 130 yards and Amari Cooper bounced back from a poor performance in a previous contest and exploded for 128 receiving yards and a touchdown on just eight catches. The Raiders’ potent offense stood out against Cleveland, and that could be the case again against the Chargers, who are seemingly incapable of putting up a consistent defensive effort. The Chargers are allowing 30.0 points and 385.0 total yards per game, 27th and 23rd in the league so far this season, respectively.
The under is 4-1 in the Raiders’ last five road games.
Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (2-2)
Despite their poor defense, the Chargers manage to survive the San Francisco 49ers last week for a 29-27 win at home. Bolts quarterback Philip Rivers was steady under center, as he recorded 250 passing yards to go along with three touchdowns and an interception. Running back Melvin Gordon supplied 104 of the team’s 126 rushing yards. He also had 55 receiving yards and a TD grab on seven catches. Wide receiver Mike Williams, however, was a major disappointment. Expected to have a field day against a Richard Sherman-less Niners secondary, the former Clemson Tigers star finished with just 15 receiving yards on a lone catch and three targets. Gordon has the potential to make a killing again for the Chargers (and for his fantasy owners) as he’s up against the Raiders’ faulty run defense that is allowing the 30th most rushing yards per game and third-most points per contest.
The Chargers are 4-1 ATS in their last five meeting with Oakland.
Writer’s Prediction
Los Angeles wins, 31-27.
