Betting on the Penn State Nittany Lions (8-0 Overall / 5-0 Conference)
The Nittany Lions struck early in their 28-7 win in East Lansing over the Michigan State Spartans in their last outing and didn’t look back. All it took for the Nittany Lions to establish their dominance was a pair of touchdown grabs by tight end Pat Freiermuth. Penn State’s defense mostly took care of business the rest of the way, as Michigan State had a hard time getting anything going in terms of moving the chains. The Nittany Lions allowed just 265 total yards to Michigan State and forced the Spartans to cough up the ball four times. Penn State’s defense can do that to opponents. In fact, the Nittany Lions are second in the nation with just 10.0 points allowed per game. It will take more for Minnesota’s usually productive backfield to get things going on the ground against Penn State’s defense that is holding opponents to only 78.1 rushing yards per game – fourth-best nationally.
The Nittany Lions are 6-4 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-0 Overall / 5-0 Conference)
The Golden Gophers are ready to deal with the toughest portion of their schedule. After going undefeated over their first eight games, including five in Big Ten play, the Gophers are set to face, for the first time this season, a ranked opponent in the form of the Nittany Lions. A high-scoring offense has been a calling card to success for Minnesota. The Golden Gophers are averaging 39.9 points and 446.9 total yards per game. In their 52-10 devouring of the hapless Maryland Terrapins, the Golden Gophers racked up 498 total yards, including 321 from their ground attack. Running back Rodney Smith finished the game with 103 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while quarterback Tanner Morgan had 138 passing yards and two touchdowns against an interception on 12-of-21 completions. The Golden Gophers’ rushing attack will be tested hard by Penn State, though, Minnesota shouldn’t veer too much away from its offensive strength.
The Golden Gophers, who are 24th in the nation with 232.0 rushing yards per game, are 5-0 ATS in their last five outings.
Writer’s Prediction
Penn State wins, 30-17.
