Favorites – Bubba Watson and Jason Day
[sc:Golf240banner ] Bubba Watson proved he is a player to watch when he won the Masters for the second time in his career in February, finishing with a three-stroke lead over the field. More recently, Watson reminded the Tour that he could win any given tournament, finishing third at the Memorial in June.
When it comes to the biggest golf events, Jason Day steps up his game. At the U.S. Open, he scored 68 in the final round to share fourth place, his seventh top-10 finish in 15 career majors.
To add to his success in grand slams, Day also has 33 top-10 finishes, six runner-up finishes and two PGA Tour titles, including the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship this year. The man competes hard every time out, and with a relatively light field set to take the course, he’s as good a bet as any.
High-Value – Kevin Na and Bill Haas
Kevin Na is coming off a disappointing 12th-place finish in the U.S. Open. Na flirted with contention in the final rounds of the tournament, but a costly double-bogey at the 15th sent him tumbling down the leaderboard. Still, the short game specialist was one hole from a top-two finish at one of the toughest courses on the circuit.
Bad hole aside, Na was also the runner-up at another recent tournament, the Memorial Tournament. At the Memorial Tournament, Na lost to Hideko Matsuyama to par on the first playoff hole.
Bill Haas is another high-value pick to win the Greenbrier Classic. His performances at the Quicken Loans National and the U.S. Open left much to be desired as he finished 30th and 35th, respectively. Still, his best has been very good of late. He tied for eighth at the Memorial Tournament, and led the first round of the Masters with a score of 68.
If Haas can recover his form from those tournaments, Greenbrier will be winnable for him.
Long Shots – Stuart Appleby and Oliver Goss
Stuart Appleby hasn’t ranked in the top-10 at a tournament recently, but he has the experience of winning nine PGA Tour titles and three PGA Tour of Australia wins to his credit. One of the older competitors in professional golf, Appleby has also ranked as high as second at World Golf Championship Events twice in his career.
A talented youngster in the sport, Oliver Goss had a stellar showing in just his second week as a professional golfer when he led after two rounds at the Quicken Loans National. In the tournament, Goss played without a bogey, despite hitting only fur of the 14 fairways in the course. The 20-year old can golf, and as a fresh face to the tour, there is lots of value on this young upstart.
