Betting on the Philadelphia Flyers
[sc:NHL240 ]The Philadelphia Flyers are back to their losing ways at the Garden after a 4-2 road loss versus the New York Rangers in Game 5 on Sunday. With their season hanging in the balance, the Flyers host Game 6 of the series at Wells Fargo Center, where they are 4-1 in their last five games against New York.
A virtual no-show in the first four games of the series, Claude Giroux finally appeared in Game 5 by tallying his first postseason goal in the third period. Giroux is having a hard time getting off shots in the series; he only had four total shots on goal through four games. In Game 5, however, Giroux was more aggressive and attempted six shots.
The Flyers have been outscored by the Rangers in the series, 15-10, seven of which have come in the first period. With the exception of Game 1, New York has scored first in every game of the series, forcing the Flyers to play catch-up hockey. This should have Craig Berube’s team playing stricter defense in the opening period of Game 6, especially Steve Mason. Mason allowed three goals on 14 shots by the Rangers in the first two periods of Game 5.
Philadelphia is 7-3 in its last 10 home games with Mason in goal.
Betting on the New York Rangers
A win away from eliminating their rivals and advancing to the next round, the Rangers look to regain their bearings on the road just in time for Game 6. The Rangers have lost three of their last four road games, including their 2-1 loss to the Flyers in Game 4.
Despite another scintillating overall performance by goalie Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers’ defense has left much to be desired in this series, particularly on the penalty kill. New York has allowed the Flyers to score twice on the man advantage in the last two games, and three times in the series as a whole.
Lundqvist remains a force in the net for New York. He had saved all but nine of the Flyers’ 113 (.926 Sv%) attempts in four games. However, with Claude Giroux appearing to have gotten his game back, Lundqvist and the Rangers may be in for a more robust defensive test in Game 6.
The under is 4-1 in New York’s last five road games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Henrik Lundqvist will shutout Philadelphia in Game 6 to finish the series.
