Betting on the Pittsburgh Panthers (+6)
The Panthers turned last Saturday’s game against Penn State into a track meet—seriously. Making most of their damage on the ground, the Panthers rushed for 341 rushing yards in a 42-39 victory over the Nittany Lions.Three Panthers rushed for at least 52 yard in that game led by James Conner, who had 117 to go with a rushing score. It’s hard to think the Panthers will suddenly deviate from this game plan even against Oklahoma State, which allowed just 57 rushing yards to the Chippewas. That said, quarterback Nathan Peterman will still need to be busy and effective at the same time just to keep the Cowboys’ defense honest. Peterman passed for only 91 yards on 11-for-15 throws against Penn State.
Up against the Cowboys’ potent passing game, the Panthers’ pass rush has to flash its fangs once again. Pittsburgh’s ferocious defense has recorded 10 sacks on the season, which is tied for most in the nation.
Pittsburgh is 6-4 SU and ATS in its last 10 road games.
Betting on the Oklahoma State Cowboys (-6)
Coming off a tough loss, the Cowboys look to get back in the win column and restore what’s left of their College Football Playoff credentials this Saturday in Stillwater. They are 6-4 SU and 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games as the home team.
It was sickening for the Cowboys how they lost in the last game. A missed call by the officials prompted the Chippewas into scoring the game-winning touchdown against Oklahoma State. As much as the refs were to blame for their loss, the Cowboys wouldn’t be in such precarious situation if only they did better—especially on the ground. Oklahoma State rushed for a laughable 50 yards. Considering the stout defense of Pitt against the pass, the Cowboys might be forced to lean on their passing attack more.
That’s a big responsibility for quarterback Mason Rudolph, who definitely can sling the ball. Rudolph passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns with an interception against CMU.
While the Panthers’ run defense is imposing enough to limit expectations of Oklahoma State’s backfield, their passing defense is something Rudolph and wide receiver James Washington could definitely exploit. The Panthers had a hard time containing Penn State’s air attack, letting Trace McSorely rack up 332 passing yards.
The Cowboys just need to strike early and find their mojos back following that painful loss to CMU.
