Betting on the Portland Trail Blazers (+5.5)
Regular Season Record: 40-29
As of this writing, the Blazers will have to tackle the Utah Jazz on Wednesday first before taking on the Suns the following day. Regardless of what happens in that matchup with Utah, it’s safe to say that the Blazers are on a groove right now, having won all of their past four games. In their last game, they torched the Houston Rockets’ defense in a 140-120 home win on Monday. Damian Lillard, CJ McCollum, and Norman Powell are playing sweet music together on offense, while the frontcourt is solid with the tandem of Jusuf Nurkic and Enes Kanter. Sure, the Blazers are 0-2 straight up this season against the Suns, but Portland didn’t have CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic in both games. Portland is fifth in the NBA with 116.0 points per contest, heading into the Utah game.
The Blazers are 5-2 straight up in their last seven games in Phoenix.
Betting on the Phoenix Suns (-5.5)
Regular Season Record: 48-21
The Suns are suddenly struggling to win games. They have lost their last two games, falling prey to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday (123-1110) and to the Golden State Warriors (122-116) on Tuesday, both on the road. Now, the Suns will try to recapture the dominant form that has made them a force this season not only in the West but in the entire NBA. A game back home could just be the cure the team needs. The Suns have won nine of their last 10 home games and covered the spread in seven of those contests. Devin Booker and Chris Paul along with Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges can take turns in taking advantage of Portland’s unimpressive defense that allowed nearly 130 points to a team like Houston recently. The Blazers are just 23rd in the NBA with 114.5 points allowed per game and 25th in opponents’ field goal percentage.
The Suns are 15-5 against the spread in games after a loss.
Writer’s Prediction
The Suns win, 117-114.
