Betting on the San Antonio Spurs (60-18)
With the playoffs looming and the second seed in the Western Conference all but locked up, Gregg Popovich has decided to rest his stars for the Spurs’ showdown with the Mavericks this coming Friday. Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol will miss out on Friday’s clash with Popovich clearly looking at the bigger picture. The five-time NBA champions are in the middle of a brutal stretch that features six games in nine nights, including two sets of back-to-backs in a five-day span.
Popovich already used his starters sparingly in the Spurs’ 102-95 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. Popovich, however, praised his reserves for their effort in that ballgame, as they led a furious fightback from 26 points down. With Danny Green, Dejounte Murray and Manu Ginobili also sidelined for Friday’s game, the onus is on Davis Bertans and Kyle Anderson to carry the scoring cudgels for the Silver and Black. They combined for 25 points in the loss to the Lakers.
The Spurs are 7-3 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Dallas Mavericks (32-46)
As the regular season winds down, the Dallas Mavericks have gone on a bit of a funk. They have lost six of their last seven games, including Wednesday’s 112-101 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Mavs will look to turn things around against the Spurs at American Airlines Center where they are 21-18 this season.
The wins may be drying up for the Mavs but the same can’t be said about their outside shots. They have made at least 10 3-pointers in six straight games, tying the season-high streak. It has not translated into wins, however, for Dallas as they are just 1-5 in those games. For the Mavs to even their season-series against the Spurs, they will need Harrison Barnes to step up his play. He was riddled with foul trouble in the loss to the Clippers, scoring just 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Barnes is averaging 18.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in three meetings with the Spurs this season.
The Mavs are 6-4 SU and ATS in their last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Mavs (-5.5) ease past the short-handed Spurs, 100-90.
