Betting on the San Diego Padres (27-40)
The Padres have something going, folks! This is a type of stretch that could help them get some wins back over the Brewers, a team they lost to four out of five times in their previous series. They are now winners of three straight following their sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, who they beat with a combined score of 19-7.
A pair of lesser known dudes have been giving the Padres a nice boost in the past week – Jose Pirela is an efficient 12-for-27 with two homers, eight runs, and six RBIs, while Cory Spangenberg is 10-for-23 with two homers. They may cool off in a week or two, but for now, we can continuously look forward to good numbers.
Pirela and Spangenberg will have to do a lot on offense, as the team’s probable starting pitcher, Miguel Diaz, isn’t able to offer much. The rookie has thrown for 26 innings this season, allowing 21 runs on 25 hits and 16 walks, with 19 strikeouts.
San Diego is 4-18 this season when Diaz pitched in the game.
Betting on the Milwaukee Brewers (35-32)
Like the Padres, the National League Central-leading Brewers have also stacked together three straight wins. They downed the St. Louis Cardinals in their series finale this past Thursday, 6-4, thanks to Eric Thames belting a clutch, two-run homer at the top of the 9th with two outs.
Thames has come back to life, as he is now 4-for-9 with two dingers in his last two games after getting blanked in his 11 prior at-bats. He, Travis Shaw, Keon Broxton, Hernan Perez, and Eric Sogar, collectively have eight home runs in the past week.
The potent offense will try to be complemented on defense by second-year hurler Junior Guerra, who’s a bit tough to gauge. The Venezuelan is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in five starts this season, and has only allowed eight runs in the 25.2 innings he has tossed in. However, the Brewers are only 1-4 in the games he has pitched in.
Writer’s Prediction
The Brewers (-157) blast the Padres, 10-5.
