Betting on the San Diego Padres (16-31)

Moneyline: +137

The National League-West bottoming Padres took another L on Tuesday night. The series-opening, 9-3 defeat in the hands of the Mets was their 15th loss in 19 games and it was the third time in four games that they gave up nine or more runs.

As usual, the offense had an uneventful day, only going 7-for-33 with 13 strikeouts. It was a great representation of how the team has been batting all season, as they are dead-last in hits (37), batting average (.219) and on-base percentage (.287), and 29th in runs (161).

With the batting being all over the place, the starting pitcher, of course, will have more pressure. Jarred Cosart is the next guy in line to fill those shoes. He’s 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in four appearances this season – 13.1 innings, 13 hits, six runs (four earned), seven walks, and seven Ks. Additionally, the Mets are batting .274 against him all-time (26-for-95).

San Diego is 3-9 in Cosart’s 12 total starts with the team (2016-present).

Betting on the New York Mets (19-24)

Moneyline: -152

The Mets returned to the winning column with the aforementioned win. They have now won three of their last four after a seven-game losing streak last week.

Tuesday’s win was led by Michael Conforto and Lucas Duda, who combined for six hits and seven RBIs. Conforto, who paces the club in various stats, including hits, runs, and batting average, is continuing to be a great source of offense, as he is now 10-for-18 with three homers, seven RBIs, and nine runs in his last five outings. We should see him have more productive nights moving forward, particularly versus the Padres.

Those two hitters may have to do a lot, since the pitching for Wednesday could probably be shaky. Starter Robert Gsellman is just 2-3 in 10 games this season, tallying an ugly 6.75 ERA.

One of the team’s relievers, Jerry Blevins, who has a 1.80 ERA through an MLB-high 25 mound appearances, has a chance to save the day.. but that’s IF Gsellman doesn’t mess it up too much.

Writer’s Prediction

The Mets (-152) take it, 6-3.
