Betting on the San Diego Padres (17-31)

Moneyline: +138

Now that was a close call! The San Diego Padres escaped a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth to record a nerve-wracking 6-5 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday. Brad Hand might have recorded the final three outs in a pressure-packed situation but it was Hunter Renfroe who really stole the show for San Diego in this gripping clash. He delivered a memorable game-winner in the eighth inning, hitting a mammoth 450-foot homer to left field. That was the longest homer in Renfroe’s career and his third in the eighth inning or later.

The Padres will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they lock horns with the Mets in the final game of their three-game set tonight. Starting for San Diego in this series finale is Dinelson Lamet. The Padres’ 10th-ranked prospect will be making his major league debut after an impressive start to his season at Triple-A. Lamet has struck out 50 batters in 39 innings this season, posting a 3.23 ERA in the process. He allowed one run or fewer in six of his eight starts with the El Paso Chihuahuas.

The total has gone over in the Padres’ last three road games.

Betting on the New York Mets (19-25)

Moneyline: -153

With the Mets struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Jacob deGrom to deliver a quality start for New York tonight. He was magnificent in his last start against the Los Angeles Angels, throwing seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 win last Friday. That was the first time in 18 games that a Mets pitcher recorded an out in the seventh inning. Thanks to that shutout victory, deGrom lowered his ERA from 4.07 to 3.56.

DeGrom can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Mets hitters to contribute on the offensive end as well this evening. They are just 23rd in the majors in batting average and on-base percentage. Expected to spearhead New York in that department is Michael Conforto. He leads the team not only in batting average but also in homers, RBIs, on-base percentage and hits. The Mets’ leadoff hitter went 2-of-3 last night in the loss against the Padres with one RBI.

The Mets are 6-4 in their last 10 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

The Mets (-153) ease past the Padres, 9-2.
