Betting on the San Diego Padres

Moneyline: +210

Starting for San Diego in this series opener is Luis Perdomo (0-1, 5.79 ERA). The right-hander is coming off the worst start of his professional career, in which he surrendered eight runs over three innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres lost that ballgame, 9-1. It’s paramount for the Padres that Perdomo establishes his command with the sinkerball. His 69 percent ground-ball rate is the best among pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched.

With Perdomo struggling with his command right now, the onus is on the San Diego hitters to provide some crucial run support for Friday’s clash. Expected to lead the Padres offense in this encounter is Wil Myers. The All-Star first baseman is 4-of-9 (.444) in his career against Washington starter Max Scherzer with two homers and a pair of RBIs.

Betting on the Washington Nationals (28-18)

Moneyline: -250

The Washington Nationals had their three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday with a gut-wrenching 4-2 defeat to the Seattle Mariners. Nelson Cruz took full advantage of Gio Gonzalez’s departure in the sixth inning, blasting a three-run homer off Nats reliever Jacob Turner to spark the comeback win. With the loss, Washington dropped down to 28-18 in the NL East standings.

The Nationals will look to return to the win column when they face the San Diego Padres this coming Friday. Starting for Washington in this National League matchup is Max Scherzer. He struggled with his command Saturday against the Atlanta Braves, allowing three runs on four hits (two homers) and three walks over only five innings. Even with that rough outing, the Nats ace still owns a crisp 3.02 ERA, 11.5 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 this season. Since joining Washington, Scherzer has made mincemeat of San Diego, posting a 1.35 ERA in three starts against the Padres.

Scherzer doesn’t need to be perfect, though, against the Padres as Washington’s offense is firing on all cylinders right now. The Nationals lead the majors in batting average, on-base percentage, homers and RBIs this season. One guy who’s batting really well for Washington at the moment is Anthony Rendon. He recorded four homers and nine RBIs in the interleague series against Seattle.

The Nationals are 7-3 in their last 10 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Washington (-250) wins, 6-2.
