Serena Williams’ Edge (-380):
Serena Williams is going to be extremely motivated in this finals matchup with Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon 2016. The defending champion won’t just be striving to equalize Steffi Graf’s Open-Era record of 22 Grand Slam titles, but is also out for revenge against Kerber, who defeated her in the same stage at Melbourne this year.As always, Williams’ unwavering aggression, incomparable determination and powerful serves will likely dictate the outcome. All of those traits were on full display in yesterday’s straight-sets victory (6-2, 6-0) over semifinals opponent, Elena Vesnina. The 34-year-old American simply owned that match all throughout, finishing with 11 aces and 28 winners while also winning 96 percent of her first serve points.
However, keep in mind that Williams, who is 5-2 all-time versus the World No. 4, seems to have formed an unfortunate habit of collapsing at this type of occasion. She’s lost her previous two appearances in major finals, bowing to Garbine Muguruza at Roland Garros and to, as mentioned earlier, Kerber at the Australian Open.
Angelique Kerber’s Edge (+290):
Angelique Kerber has turned a lot of heads in Wimbledon 2016 as well. In fact, it’s arguable to say she’s performed slightly better than Serena Williams.
The 2016 Australian Open champion has yet to lose a set in the tournament. More importantly, her run at the All England Club includes a pair of huge victories at the expenses of World No. 5 Simona Halep in the quarterfinals, and five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in yesterday’s semifinals.
Against the latter, Kerber exhibited the level of speed, craftiness and confidence that can put Serena in uncomfortable spots. If so, it should eventually force the American to commit more errors than the usual.
Plus, the German’s durability and God-given talent to turn defense into offense is bound to play a major role in preventing the World No. 1 from setting Centre Court ablaze.
Writer’s Prediction: It’s really hard to say to be honest, but I’m going to have to put my trust in Serena (-380), who should get the job done after three tight sets.
