Betting on Serena Williams (-600)
Serena Williams’ bid for a seventh Australian Open title remains right on track after destroying Nicole Gibbs, 6-1, 6-3 in the third round on Saturday. With the victory, the world no. 2 booked a place in the fourth round of the Australian Open for the 13th time in her storied career. Playing in Rod Laver Arena, Serena displayed the ruthless power that made her the finest player of her generation. She outhit Gibbs in the winners department, 17-9. In this tournament thus far, Serena is averaging a whopping 27.3 winners per match. She also has recorded 27 aces in this year’s Australian Open – good for third in the free-points table.
Next up for Williams is a round-of-16 clash with Barbora Strycova. The 35-year-old will fancy her chances against Strycova as she has won each of her two previous meetings with the Czech star. They have faced each other in the Australian Open once before, with Serena winning in straight sets in the second round back in 2012. For Williams to extend her dominance against Strycova, she needs to bring her aggressive style and continue her strong net play in the fourth round. She won 92 percent (12-of-13) of her net points against Gibbs in the third round.
Williams is 8-2 in her last 10 matches.
Betting on Barbora Strycova (+400)
Barbora Strycova booked a spot in the fourth round of the 2017 Australian Open with a convincing 6-2, 7-5 win over Caroline Garcia on Saturday. It was a brilliant showing from Strycova, who needed just 87 minutes to outlast the Frenchwoman. With the victory, Strycova is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open for the second year running. She will face her toughest test to date, however, this coming Monday when she squares off with the great Serena Williams in the round of 16. Williams has been on a tear in this event, winning 16 of her last 17 Australian Open matches.
For Strycova to record a major upset in the next round, she will need her return play to be rock-solid against the hard-serving Williams. She won 46 percent of her receiving points in the third round against Garcia with Strycova converting four of her five break point opportunities. That being said, Strycova has to be aggressive right from the get-go for her to stand a chance against Serena. She will need to put pressure on the American superstar and she can do that by employing her highly-effective net play. She won all of her seven net points in the previous round against Garcia.
Strycova is 8-2 in her last 10 matches.
