Betting on Serena Williams

For a moment there, tennis fans started to worry about Serena Williams’ run at the calendar-year Grand Slam being in jeopardy after a tight three-set win over Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the third round of the US Open. But in the fourth round of the tournament, Williams redeemed herself with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets victory over World No. 19 Madison Keys.

[sc:Other240banner ]The best female tennis player in the world today (and quite possibly of all-time) needed just 68 minutes this time around to dispatch her latest opponent in Flushing. Williams committed just six unforced errors, won 22 of her 28 first serve points and denied the upstart American from facing a single break point during their match on Sunday.

The win over Keys marks Williams’ 25th-straight win in major tournaments this year, and her 32nd-consecutive victory at Grand Slam events overall dating back to last year’s US Open.

Serena has had her sister’s number as of late, winning seven of their last eight matches. In their most recent encounter, Venus became one of the casualties of Serena’s Grand Slam tears, with her younger sister nabbing an easy a 6-4, 6-3 win at Wimbledon this July. Serena smashed her way to victory in that match by serving up 10 aces and contained Venus by having her convert just 33 percent of her points on second serve.

Betting on Venus Williams

Venus Williams US Open

Not to be outdone, Venus Williams made even quicker work of her fourth round opponent at the US Open than her sister did with hers. Venus needed just 50 minutes to eliminate Anett Kontaveit from the tournament with a swift 6-2, 6-1 win. Williams won 51 of the 79 points of the match and also broke Estonian’s serve four times on Sunday.

It will be a bittersweet quarterfinal for Williams, who wants to see her sister Serena succeed at her historic feat in the making, but is also looking for her first Grand Slam title since 2008. And in spite of her sibling’s domination in their rivalry over the past few years, Venus has still pretty much held her own against Serena throughout her career.

Serena just has a 15-11 record all-time against Venus, including 8-5 in Grand Slam tournaments. Their battles in Flushing are even split down the middle, with each player winning two games apiece including Venus’ victory from back in 2001 for the US Open title.

Expect Tuesday’s match to go the distance, with the elder Williams sister pushing her other half to the limit. Venus has shown great mettle this season by winning eight of her 11 three-set matches. Furthermore, two of those eight wins were fresh from the first and second rounds played in Arthur Ashe stadium just this past week.

Writer’s Prediction

Serena overcomes yet another slow start to beat Venus in three hotly-contested sets, moving her two wins closer to her fourth-straight US Open crown.
