Betting on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (+45)
Record: 1-2 Overall / 0-0 Conference
Southern Miss could not sustain its momentum following a 37-0 home win over the Grambling Tigers in Week 2, as the Golden Eagles lost to the Troy Trojans last Saturday, 21-9. Quarterback Ty Keyes went 16/27 for the Golden Eagles against Troy and finished with 157 passing yards and two interceptions. It’s not about to get any easier for him and the Golden Eagles’ offense, with Alabama waiting for them in Tuscaloosa, so Keyes and company might have to play a very conservative style against the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s defense is going to be all over the Golden Eagles, but Southern Miss’ own stop unit could also have its shining moments in this game. Southern Miss held its first two opponents down to just 100 rushing yards or fewer and entered the Troy game seventh in the nation in total yards allowed per game.
Southern Miss is 4-2 against the spread in its last six games. The Golden Eagles are also 2-1 in their last three meetings with Alabama.
Betting on the Alabama Crimson Tide (-45)
Record: 3-0 Overall / 1-0 Conference
Alabama escaped Week 3 with a narrow 31-29 road win over the Florida Gators. It was a gutsy win on the road against a ranked opponent, so that kind of challenge from Florida was to be expected. Plus, it does seem that Alabama needs a nail-biter like that to keep the team on its toes after blowing its opponents in the first two weeks. The Crimson Tide torched the Miami Hurricanes in Week 1 (44-13) then destroyed the Mercer Bears (48-14) before the showdown with Florida. As mentioned earlier, Alabama’s defense is not going to make things easy for Southern Miss. So far this season, the Crimson Tide have forced six turnovers, five of which off of interceptions. That kind of defense is brutal for Alabama opponents, especially since the Crimson Tide also have an efficient offense. In the Florida game, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young passed for three touchdowns with zero interceptions.
Alabama is 7-1 against the spread in its last eight home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Alabam wins, 48-7.
