The Tampa Bay Rays, who have already been eliminated from playoff contention, have done well to play spoilers in this long, four-game set with the Orioles.

The Rays currently lead the series, 2-1, and have a relatively good chance of winning the entire thing with Jake Odorizzi (9-6, 3.81 ERA) taking the rubber in this afternoon’s finale. He limited Toronto to just two runs in seven innings of work despite getting his 15th no-decision of the season last Monday. Odorizzi has limited his opponents to two runs or fewer eight times in his previous 11 starts.

Odorizzi can also expect solid contributions from his teammates at the plate. The Rays have tallied five runs or more in their last five games, and have scored a total of 17 runs in this series with Baltimore. A big reason for that success is thanks Evan Longoria, who‘s gone 9-for-18 with a triple, three homers and eight RBIs in his last five contests.

Tampa Bay is 5-5 SU in its past 10 road games.

Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (-124)

A spot in the postseason is still far from a sure thing for the Baltimore Orioles. They currently hold the final wild card slot in the American League, holding onto a 2.5-game advantage over the Mariners. That situation should be enough to show how important every win and loss is for the O’s.

A win is obviously what the O’s are seeking today, but they might have to take the hard route in doing so with a struggling Wade Miley (8-13, 5.80 ERA) on the mound. He logged in just 1 1/3 innings in his last start, giving up a total of six runs on eight hitsversus the Red Sox.

Having that considered, the Orioles need to light up some fireworks at the plate. Look to Manny Machado, Adam Jones or J.J. Hardy to lead the charge there. Machado owns team-highs of .304 BA, .353 OBP and 178 hits this season, while Jones has managed to get at least one hit in the first three games of the series.

Hardy, on the other hand, has been the most impressive throughout this month of September, carrying a sizzling triple-slash line of .370/.442/.564. He’s also gone 6-for-10 with two runs, a double and four RBIs in the series.

Baltimore is 0-4 SU in its last four home games with Miley starting.

Writer’s Prediction

Tampa Bay (+114) wins, 6-3.
