Betting on the Tampa Bay Rays (5-2)
Behind six strong frames from Jake Odorizzi, and a three-run homer by Steven Souza Jr., the Rays got a 7-2 victory on Sunday, claiming three out of four games in the home series against Toronto.
The Tampa Bay offense has been quite hot of late, managing 20 runs in total over the previous three contests. Corey Dickerson, Logan Morrison and the aforementioned Souza Jr. are each batting no lower than .333 in the first seven games this season, including a total of 15 runs-batted-in and four dingers combined
The Rays will send Alex Cobb to the mound for the second time this season, hoping the right-hander builds on his previous start. He logged in 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball along with four strikeouts to get the W against the Yankees last week. Cobb is 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA in four career starts in that matchup.
Tampa Bay is 4-1 SU in its last five contests.
Betting on the New York Yankees (2-4)
Winning just two of their first six games—not to mention getting almost swept by Baltimore on Sunday—isn’t obviously how the Yankees wanted to open the season. But maybe this home opener versus Tampa Bay is where New York can start swinging in consecutive victories.
The Yankees, who will be wearing the pinstripes for the first time this year, are handing the ball to a slumping Michael Pineda who, in his first start, permitted four runs on eight hits in a 4-1 loss at Tropicana Field last week. He hasn’t won in his past 11 starts, the longest losing stretch of his career.
Pineda’s woes should already be a warning for the offense to produce. Starlin Castro and Aaron Judge were huge in New York’s 7-3 win against the Orioles, combining for three hits, three RBIs and one homer from the latter.
The Pinstripes are a +1,400 bet to win the American League pennant.
Writer’s Prediction
Tampa Bay (+134) wins, 5-3.
