Betting on the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks (TBA)

Don’t tell the Skyhawks how big the challenge is for them later tonight when they pay the storied Rupp Arena a visit. While UT Martin is up against top-ranked Kentucky, the Skyhawks is riding a wave of momentum, having all of their last three assignments.

In its last outing, UT Martin took down Duquesne, 66-63. The Skyhawks leaned heavily on guard Jacolby Mobley, who pumped in 25 points on 11 of 21 shooting. Mobley leads the team with 17.4 points per game but there are four other Skyhawks averaging at least 11.3 PPG. With lots of options on offense, the Skyhawks are a team capable of gaining momentum early, especially if opponents play them soft—something Kentucky has a tendency of doing, considering the talent gap between the two teams.

All told, the Skyhawks are averaging 81.5 points per game and has shown that they could keep in step with Division I teams when they lost a close one to Ole Miss to start the season, 86-83.

Betting on the Kentucky Wildcats (TBA)

Let’s take a second to meditate on just how great Malik Monk’s start to his college career has been. Monk has definitely looked the part of the much-ballyhooed baller John Calipari recruited, as the freshman is averaging 17.2 PPG through the first give games of the season.

With the Wildcats leading scorer in Isaiah Briscoe probably out for tonight’s ball game, Monk will pick up most of the scoring cudgels, though he’ll sure get a ton of help from the likes of fellow freshmen De’Aaron Fox (15.4 PPG) and Edrice Adebayo (10.2 PPG).

The Wildcats are scoring 88.6 PPG and they even made more than that in their 101-70 annihilation of Cleveland State last Wednesday. Kentucky had little problem in disposing off the Vikings, as it shot 52.1 percent from the field while seeing their opponents commit 19 turnovers.

The Wildcats are among the peskiest in the nation defensively. In fact their opponents turn the ball over 4.2 times per contest, fifth in the nation.

Writer’s Prediction

Kentucky wins, 95-70.
