Betting on the Texas Longhorns (odds)

Record: 12-3 Overall / 2-1 Conference

Texas hit a wall last Saturday, as the Longhorns suffered a 64-51 road loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, which ended the Longhorns’ six-game win streak. The Longhorns couldn’t get it going on offense, as they shot just 38.5 percent from the field, though they went 8/17 from the 3-point region. The Longhorns, however, aren’t really a high-scoring team, largely because they play a deliberate pace. In fact, Texas ranks 354th nationally in terms of adjusted tempo and what factoring that in, the Longhorns would turn out to be among the most efficient scoring teams in college basketball. Led by Timmy Allen, who is averaging just 11.9 points per game, the Longhorns are 35th in the nation with 112.0 points per 100 possessions. But the true strength of this team is its defense. Chris Beard’s team, which hosts the Oklahoma Sooners Tuesday, is tops overall with just 53.1 points allowed per contest.

Texas is 4-3 against the spread in its last seven home games.

Betting on the Iowa State Cyclones (odds)

Record: 13-2 Overall / 1-2 Conference Conference

Iowa State suffered its second loss of the season – and second in three games – last Saturday, with the Cyclones getting torched by the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, 79-66. Prior to that game, Iowa State lost to No. 1 Baylor Bears (77-72) and won against the Texas Tech Red Raiders (51-47) – both at home. The Cyclones have another tough matchup ahead, as they will take on the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence Tuesday night. Whatever happens in that game, that’s a good warm-up for Iowa State for its date with the Longhorns. The Cyclones also boast of a stingy defense that’s currently giving up just 58.4 points per game. They are so good in closing out on shooters, with teams barely making 27 percent of their 3-point shots versus Iowa State, who is being led by the backcourt duo of Izaiah Brockington and Tyrese Hunter.

Iowa State is 3-1 against the spread in its last four home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Iowa State wins, 60-59.
