Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (odds)

Record: 14-6 Overall / 6-5 Conference

Texas Tech lost to the West Virginia Mountaineers at home last Tuesday, 82-71, which saw the Red Raiders’ three-game winning streak get snapped. The Red Raiders have a date with the TCU Horned Frogs this Thursday in Fort Worth before taking on Kansas again. Texas Tech’s usually tight defense did not have the same effect on West Virginia, which shot 48.9 percent from the field and went 7 of 15 from behind the arc. However, Texas Tech forced the Mountaineers to commit 15 turnovers. Nevertheless, Texas Tech is still 20th in the nation with just 62.7 points allowed per game with opponents shooting only a shade over 40 percent from the field.  In the Big 12, Texas Tech ranks first in blocks percentage (12.6) and in non-steal turnover percentage (11.5).  The Red Raiders held Kansas to only 40.4 percent shooting in a 58-57 home loss back in December.

The over is 4-1 in Texas Tech’s last five road games.

Betting on the Kansas Jayhawks (odds)

Record: 15-7 Overall / 9-5 Conference

Kansas has scored three victories in a row for the first time this season after defeating the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Feb. 6 (78-66) and the Iowa State Cyclones in a home-and-away set up. The Jayhawks beat Iowa State at home on Feb. 11 (97-64) and again in Ames on Feb. 13 (64-50). Wins are always nice to look at, but these recent victories for the Jayhawks are mostly empty caloric types against teams that are not really considered contenders — not even for a Big 12 title this season. If the Jayhawks want to make a statement, the game against Texas Tech on Saturday will be an excellent opportunity for them. The Jayhawks survived Texas Tech’s defense in December by winning the rebounding battle, 36-29. Ochai Agbaji had 23 points and five rebounds in that game, while Marcus Garrett had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in 35 minutes.

Kansas, which plays the Kansas State Wildcats this Wednesday on the road, is  3-0 against the spread in its last three home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Kansas wins, 69-66.
