Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays (6-14)
The Toronto Blue Jays picked up a much-needed 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in extra-innings last night. That win was the Jays’ fourth in their last seven games after starting the season 2-11. However, they’re still stuck at the bottom of the AL at 6-14.
The Jays’ awful offense is having its best stretch of the young season. They’ve now scored six or more runs in three of their last five games, although two of those were in extra innings.
The Blue Jays are yet to win back-to-back games this season, and they will turn to Mat Latos to help them get it. The 29-year-old righty only made his season debut last week in an 8-7 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Latos gave up four runs on six hits in five innings.
Latos, who has spent most of his career in the NL, has a lot of experience facing the Cardinals. His teams are 5-2 in his last seven starts against St. Louis.
Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (9-11)
The Cardinals’ streak of three straight wins was snapped last night and they had themselves to blame. They committed four errors in the game, as the last two runs they allowed were unearned.
On the bright side, their offense remained pretty solid. They had five runs on 13 hits against the Jays, and are now averaging over 11 hits in their last four games. Jedd Gyorko went 3-of-5 with an RBI, and is 9 of his last 16 with 3 RBI.
The Cards will have Carlos Martinez on the mound tonight. The righty was expected to be the team’s ace this season, but has been very rocky since a terrific performance on Opening Day. He’s given up 12 earned runs in his last 15 innings, and has taken the L in those three starts.
However, it might be to his advantage that no Toronto batters apart from the Superman-diving Chris Coghlan have too much experience facing him. The entire Jays lineup has 22 total at-bats against Martinez, and two RBI.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cardinals (-175) make the Jays wait for that first win streak of the season as they get the win at home.
