Betting on Tottenham Hotspur (-163)
Tottenham’s already slim title hopes faded away with their 1-0 defeat against West Ham, and they could be officially over by this weekend if Chelsea beat West Brom. But they will nevertheless still look to end what has been a remarkable season on a high.
This matchup with Manchester United will be especially meaningful as it’ll be the last game at White Hart Lane. Spurs have been close to perfect at home this season, going 16-2-0 with 45 goals scored and just 8 conceded.
Spurs’ impressive nine-match winning run may have ended with that loss to West Ham, but their home winning streak is still alive. They have won their last 13 games in a row at home, one short of the all-time club record. They’ve kept three straight clean sheets at home, and have won those games by a combined score of 10-0.
After they ended a long hoodoo against North London rivals Arsenal in win No. 13, it’d be fitting if Spurs also claim another rare win over United, who have simply owned them during the Premier League era.
Betting on Manchester United (+380)
Despite two unconvincing legs, Manchester United just edged past Celta Vigo to reach the Europa League final. Manager Jose Mourinho has basically prioritized the competition over the league over the past few weeks, which is smart since it’s their best chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
United lost their most recent league game against Arsenal 2-0 after Mourinho fielded a much-weakened side ahead of the second leg against Celta. They have now gone three games without a win in the league after they also draw against Swansea and Manchester City in the two games prior.
Look for Mourinho to once again make heavy rotations to his side, especially with a quick turnaround following the second leg on Thursday.
Those added changes don’t figure to help Mourinho’s poor record against top-6 sides away from home. A Jose Mourinho-managed team hasn’t scored away from home against such sides since Chelsea lost 5-3 to Spurs on New Year’s Day 2015. His sides have gone winless in those seven games, four of which have finished in 0-0 draws.
Writer’s Prediction
Tottenham (-163) deliver a proper send-off to White Hart Lane as they ease past United, 2-0.
