2016 Virginia Cavaliers Football Preview
Team Strengths
The Cavaliers have yet to pencil their starting quarterback, but one thing is for sure—Virginia is going to give the pigskin a lot to Taquan Mizzell once again. The backfield will remain the strength of Virginia’s offense this coming season following a year in which the Cavs averaged 147.9 rushing yards per game. Mizzell had 163 of the team’s 424 carries last season, putting up 671 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Those numbers should go up this year with new offensive coordinator expected to give even more emphasis on the running game.
Team Weaknesses
Virginia opponents had a fun time walking straight right through the Cavs’ defense in 2015. The Cavs were last in the ACC in scoring defense (32.2 points allowed per game) and third worst in total defense (411.5 yards allowed per game). Obviously, huge work must be done prior to the season if the Cavaliers don’t want any more embarrassment.
